A new EFSA Scientific Opinion has been released entitled, Welfare of sheep and goats during killing for purposes other than slaughter. The report reviews welfare during handling of animals, welfare during killing, animal-based measures and proper killing techniques for animals killed in on-farm emergency or for larger-scale depopulation situations. The article also contains proper positioning for captive bolt stunning. Some recommendations include killing being carried out by trained personnel, assessing animal welfare at each phase of the process and having a thorough Standard Operating Procedure that is reviewed regularly.
